Overview
Abbott has announced a medical device correction affecting certain FreeStyle Libre 3 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors distributed in the United States. This action does not affect the FreeStyle Libre 14 Day, FreeStyle Libre 2, or FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus systems.
Abbott identified that a subset of Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus sensors may provide incorrect low glucose readings.
While this issue does not affect every sensor, Abbott is asking users to check their sensor serial numbers to determine whether they are impacted. This correction was identified through Abbott’s ongoing product monitoring program, and the root cause has already been addressed.
What patients should do
Check your sensor serial number
Visit Abbott’s official lookup tool: freestylecheck.com
Enter the serial number for each sensor you have, whether unopened, in-use, or previously worn. The website will instantly confirm whether your sensor is affected.
How to find your serial number
On unopened sensors:
Look on the bottom of the carton or on the sensor applicator label.
On sensors in use or previously worn:
FreeStyle Libre 3 Reader: Settings → System Status → System Info.
FreeStyle Libre 3 app: Menu → About (top item = current sensor).
Libre app: Profile → About.
Connected insulin pumps/pens: Check the device’s user manual for how to locate the active sensor ID.
